Alereon and SunPlusIT Deliver Worldwide Wireless USB Hard Drive

AUSTIN, Texas-- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Alereon, Inc., the Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology leader for WiMedia and Certified Wireless USB applications and SunPlusIT, a leader in the design, development, research, sales of integrated circuit (ICs) for Controller & Peripherals, today introduced a Worldwide Wireless USB Hard Drive reference design based on the Alereon AL5000 Worldwide Ultra Wideband Chipset and the SunPlusIT SPIF260A USB/SATA II storage controller.
The turnkey design targets vendors of Certified Wireless USB products, promising them fast time-to-market using two proven technologies: Alereon's AL5000 worldwide Wireless USB chipset, and the SunPlusIT USB to SATA chip. The SunPlusIT platform, designed in conjunction with the first customer Toshiba, is the only wireless USB hard drive design able to meet regulatory requirements around the globe.

The Alereon's AL5000 Worldwide Wireless USB chipset integrates all of the essential RF circuitry, including synthesizer VCO/PLL, anti-alias filters, LNAs and transmit/receive (T/R) switches. In addition to integrating the Media Access Controller (MAC) and Baseband Processor (BBP), the chipset includes the firmware/software necessary to develop a worldwide Wireless USB product. Covering the entire WiMedia spectrum from 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz, the AL5000 Worldwide Wireless USB chipset was optimized for desktop and laptop PCs; after market hubs, adapters and cards; and embedded devices including PC peripherals, mobile handsets, and digital cameras, where space and power consumption are at a premium.
